Algeria secured a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against World Cup debutants Jordan, eliminating them from the tournament with a match to spare. Second-half goals from substitute Nadhir Benbouali and Amine Gouiri successfully revived the team’s campaign following their opening defeat to Argentina.

Jordan initially took the lead in the 36th minute when Nizar Al-Rashdan capitalized on a defensive error, drilling the ball into the bottom right corner. However, Algeria turned the tide in the second half after coach Vladimir Petkovic made crucial substitutions to lift the team’s intensity. Benbouali equalized in the 69th minute with a glancing header off a Riyad Mahrez corner, before Gouiri poked in the decisive winner during a goalmouth scramble with just eight minutes remaining.

The crucial victory places Algeria level with Austria on three points in Group J, while defending champions Argentina have already secured their progression to the next round as group winners. Algeria’s upcoming final group match against Austria will be a high-stakes encounter, offering them a chance for revenge 44 years after the controversial “Disgrace of Gijon” at the 1982 World Cup.
