Co-hosts Canada have made history by becoming the first team to book their place in the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup, securing a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa thanks to a breathtaking stoppage-time winner from Stephen Eustaquio.

The tense knockout fixture in Los Angeles looked destined for extra time following a stoic defensive masterclass from the South African side. However, in the 92nd minute, Eustaquio produced a moment of pure magic. The midfielder perfectly chested the ball down inside the penalty area before unleashing a clinical half-volley into the far corner, finally breaking the immense resistance of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Prior to the late winner, Canada had been left completely frustrated by a resilient defense. South Africa’s Aubrey Modiba heroically cleared a Moise Bombito header off the goal line, and Mbekezeli Mbokazi executed a desperate, goal-saving tackle to deny Jonathan David a simple tap-in. The match was not without controversy, either. Just before halftime, Canadian winger Richie Laryea went down in the box under a challenge from Khuliso Mudau. VAR upheld the referee’s decision of no penalty, sparking a furious reaction from Canada head coach Jesse Marsch, who had to be ushered away from the match officials by his own players.

By the final whistle, Marsch’s fury had transformed into absolute elation. Addressing his squad in a passionate post-match huddle, he declared them “Canadian heroes for the future children of this country.” Eustaquio’s hero status was fully backed by a monumental statistical performance on the pitch—he created five chances from set-pieces alone, officially matching Andrea Pirlo’s record for a World Cup knockout game.

Canada will now carry their incredible momentum to Houston on July 4, where they are set to face either Morocco or the Netherlands in a blockbuster last-16 showdown.
