Malaysia’s flawless group-stage campaign at the Badminton Asia Junior Championships (BAJC) in Yatsushiro, Japan, has culminated in a massive quarter-final showdown against defending champions China.

Led by Low Zi Yu, the national junior squad produced a stellar run to top Group D, remaining undefeated after dispatching Macau, South Korea, and Indonesia. Typically, finishing as group winners guarantees a more favorable quarter-final draw. However, a surprising twist in Group B forced an early meeting between the two badminton powerhouses.

China suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at the hands of Japan, forcing the tournament favorites to settle for second place in their group. This unexpected result means Malaysia must overcome their biggest hurdle much earlier than anticipated to keep their podium dreams alive.

Despite the daunting draw, team manager Datuk Dr Wan Khalik Wan Muhammad insists the squad remains unfazed and focused on their own execution. “We respect China, but we are not intimidated,” he stated confidently. “We have earned our place in the quarter-finals and believe we can produce a positive result if we perform at our best.”

Monday’s tie will undoubtedly bring back memories of recent encounters between the two nations in the mixed team event. Here is a look at their past tournament history
