The summer transfer window is heating up, and Newcastle United have swiftly responded to mounting reports that Arsenal are plotting a blockbuster move for their star midfielder, Bruno Guimarães.

Recent reports suggested that the Gunners were preparing to approach the Magpies with their first official bid for the Brazil international, amid claims of a potential £60 million cut-price release clause. Adding fuel to the fire, there are suggestions that Guimarães’s representatives have been actively sounding out potential suitors, hinting that Newcastle’s standout player might be eyeing a summer exit from St James’ Park.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly very keen to bring in Guimarães to provide top-tier competition and support for Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi in the middle of the park. With the Brazilian turning 29 this November and entering the final two years of his current contract, a £60 million valuation has been floated. Furthermore, Spanish publication AS has claimed that a verbal agreement exists allowing the player to leave if Newcastle failed to qualify for the Champions League—a bitter pill to swallow, as the Magpies missed out on European football entirely for the upcoming season.

However, Newcastle are absolutely determined to hold on to their prized asset. Shortly after the initial Arsenal links surfaced, the club issued a firm statement to the Chronicle, insisting that Guimarães is strictly “not for sale.”

The Magpies are already dealing with a significant talent drain this summer. Key forward Anthony Gordon has already secured his dream £70 million move to Barcelona, while Sandro Tonali is heavily linked with a switch to either Tottenham or Manchester United following ongoing transfer talks. Losing both Tonali and Guimarães in the exact same transfer window is a nightmare scenario Newcastle will desperately try to avoid, even if a combined sale could recoup close to £200 million for the club’s coffers.
