Jimmy Wong Eyes LA 2028 Olympics Following Stunning Start with New Partner Cheng Su Yin
National mixed doubles shuttler Jimmy Wong believes he is firmly on the right track to achieve his Olympic dream after smoothly readjusting to life back in the Badminton Association of Malaysia setup.
The 23-year-old rejoined the national team in April and has his sights set on qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics alongside his partner Cheng Su Yin. Wong expressed that having the full support of the national coaches has been incredibly beneficial. He specifically highlighted the impact of mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto, an Olympic silver-medallist and former world champion, who has helped him improve his gameplay and adapt to tough situations on the court.
While qualifying for the Olympics is his main target, Wong is careful not to put too much pressure on himself, choosing instead to focus on delivering his best performance every time he steps onto the court. However, the pair does have a clear short-term objective to elevate their competitive status.
Here are the key goals and recent highlights for the newly formed mixed doubles pair
1) The duo aims to break into the world top 32 by the end of the year
2) Improving their current ranking of 118th will allow them to easily compete in elite Super 750 and Super 1000 tournaments
3) The pair has shown immense potential by stunning world No 1 duo Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping in the opening round of the Singapore Open last month
4) Wong notes that their communication on the court is highly effective, though they are still working hard on improving certain tactical aspects of their game
